After an extraction or a serious operation, a swelling around the affected area or a small injury at the corner of the lips may occur. It is therefore advisable to place a cold pack on the external side of the wound immediately after the extraction. The cold pack must stay in place for 5-10 minutes. The same procedure should be repeated every 1-2 hours.
To prevent pain, take 1-2 tablets of common painkillers prescribed by the dentist. If the pain persists, the dosage may be repeated after 6 hours always with a full stomach.
Avoid rinsing your mouth the first day. After 24 hours, rinse your mouth with an antiseptic medicine or salt water three times a day after meals. This must continue for 4-5 days. Cleaning of the teeth must continue as usual twice a day, but with extra care around the injured area.
It is recommended to avoid chewing hard food, especially during the first 24 hours. You should take fluids or softer food and chew it on the other side. Your food for the first 24 hours must be cold. For more details, consult your soft dental diet.
Stitches are taken out by the dentist after 1-10 days. If the stitches dissolve, do not worry.
Antibiotics should be taken as indicated.
